Once in Ireland, we following a clockwise route where each and every day offers something new and different- from cruising through scenic countryside roads and quaint villages of Donegal to following sections of the 1500km Wild Atlantic Way in County Clare, visiting the Giants's Causeway and its mystical rock formations to riding the Ring of Kerry- where the natural beauty is matched by the warm hospitality of local towns.
Aside from the magnificent natural landscapes, we also have ample opportunity to savor the wonderful towns, cities and landmarks that make Ireland so well known for its vibrant and friendly culture- including Cork, Dingle, Galway, Derry, Belfast and of course, Dublin. Full of anticipation about the adventure ahead, we congregate at our hotel near the boarder of England and Wales for a briefing about the tour ahead and a meal and some drinks whilst getting to know our fellow riders and companions!
We leave our hotel and head west, skirting the southern regions of the Brecon Beacons National Park with lovely views of south Wales finest mountain range. We will make it to Fishguard in Pembrokeshire for a spot of lunch before boarding our ferry to Wexford. Once off the ferry, it is a short ride into Wexford for our first evening in Ireland
Today is a shorter distance and less riding time, but enough to start to get a feeling for Ireland. We set off and head down the main route to the south west. We shall reach Cork around lunchtime and head straight to one of the main attractions in the region- Blarney Castle. Will you dare kiss the Blarney Stone?! Later on, it is a short ride to our accommodation with enough time to have a rest or a wander around the local area before we meet for dinner.
After a slightly shorter day previously, today is a big ride as we continue down the lovely open road to the south west. We shall see sections of the coastline along the way and take the Caha Pass from County Cork into County Kerry. After Lunch, we ride the famous Ring of Kerry- a wonderful route that traces a clockwise route around the Iveragh Peninsula, stoping for a little exploration of a small16th century castle, beautifully located next to the shoreline with lovely views along the coast and out to sea. A short ride then takes us into Dingle for the evening.
Our route now turns north, traveling along lovely country roads with views of the countryside and hints of life in rural Ireland. As we take a ferry and cross from Country Kerry into County Clare, we pick up a section of the Wild Atlantic Way and stop by the famous Cliffs of Moher for spectacular views of one of Ireland's most impressive natural features. A final ride along the coast brings us to the wonderful city of Galway!
Take a day off and explore the city of Galway with its exciting food, drink and cultural scene, or head out down some small roads for a ride into the interior of Ireland and a look at some more fascinating aspects of life in Western Ireland.
Leaving Galway, we head out west towards the splendid scenery of Connemara and its National Park. Continuing up sections of the Wild Atlantic Way, this sparsely inhabited land with mountains, lochs, and old buildings of the past is a true delight to witness. As a slightly shorter distance day, we have ample opportunity to stop in places, snap some wonderful photos, stretch our legs and take in the surroundings. We finish the day in the delightful town of Westport- a true gem of western Ireland
Now into County Mayo, we ride the main route that follows the coastal sections of this quiet and pristine environment. Stopping for a look around the Wild Nephin National Park visitor centre we gain some insight on both cultural and natural aspects of this remote region of Ireland. Continuing on through beautiful countryside, we pass into Sligo and eventually up to Donegal town for the evening.
A lovely days ride awaits as we ride into the depths of County Donegal. Our route takes us into the far north west of Ireland, at times breaking away from the main route and heading down some smaller roads and through remote communities where Gaelic remains the main language. Later on, we head eastwards and past Glenveagh National Park, stopping for some wonderful views of the landscape and into Derry for the late afternoon for a little exploration of this fascinating city and its historical landmarks.
Today is slightly shorter- though no less impressive- day of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as we pass through 3 separate areas designated as AONBs (Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty)! Initially, it is a route along the coast past Binevenagh AONB, then onto Giant's Causeway- a world heritage site and AONB- where we stop to observe the intricate rock formations- and then onwards to the Antrim Coast and Glens AONB. A last section brings us into Belfast in the early/mid afternoon with plenty of time to head out for a wander around this intriguing city.
From one capital city to another! Leaving Belfast, we head down the eastern edge of Strangford Lough and then join the coastal route around the Mourne mountains AONB. From here, it is our route heads inland, back into the Republic of Ireland and across open countryside before arriving in Dublin.
Take the opportunity to explore Ireland's largest and most vibrant city by taking a walk through Temple Bar, visiting the Guinness Factory at St James Gate and Trinity College University. Alternatively, head out for a ride for further exploration of rural Ireland and the countryside of the interior regions.
Our final full day in Ireland has us leave Dublin to the south and into the beautiful Wicklow Mountains National Park. We take a very convoluted route to see as much as we can of this stunning region, and stop along the way to take in the scenery. Later on in the day, the mountains smooth out to rolling countryside and we pull into Wexford for the later afternoon/ early evening.
We up and out early to catch our early morning ferry back to Wales. We then ride a slightly modified route scenic route back through the south Wales countryside and past the Brecon Beacons again before arriving in Ross-on-Wye where we say our farewells, until the next tour at least!
